Oct 21, 2024 - Board of Education Communication Regarding Retirement of RCSD Superintendent Dr. Eric Byrne
Dear Rye City School District Community,
This evening Superintendent Dr. Eric Byrne announced that he will be retiring from our school
district at the end of this school year. For eight years, the Rye City Schools have benefited
tremendously from Dr. Byrne’s commitment to continuous improvement, visionary leadership,
and tireless dedication. Dr. Byrne has led the District through periods of great growth and
success, leaving an indelible mark through the creation of The Rye Commitment, which will
continue to drive the work of the District.
Among his many accomplishments and contributions, Dr. Byrne has cultivated strong leadership
across our school district. We are confident that our assistant superintendents, building leaders,
teachers and staff will provide the stability and support needed to make this a seamless
transition. Dr. Byrne will continue to lead the District and help prepare them to welcome our next
Superintendent.
The process of finding our next Superintendent begins at tomorrow night’s Board of Education
meeting where we will issue a Request for Proposals to regional and local search firms to assist
in this process. Once the Board selects a search firm, we will work with the firm to develop a
timeline and details around the search process. During the search process, there will be
opportunities for the community to provide input to assist us in identifying the qualities we seek
in our next Superintendent. As the process gets underway, we will share materials and
information about the search on the Board of Education page of the District website, in emails
and during Board of Education meetings. We appreciate the importance of this decision and
will work tirelessly to find someone who exemplifies Dr. Byrne’s leadership qualities and who will
continue to help the District uphold the key tenets of The Rye Commitment. In the meantime,
members of our community who have questions or concerns may reach out to the Board at
rcsdboard@ryeschools.org.
Thank you, Dr. Byrne, for your dedication and visionary leadership to our community. We look
forward to upcoming opportunities to celebrate your many contributions to our students,
teachers, staff and families.
Sincerely,
RCSD Board of Education

Oct 21, 2024 - Retirement Announcement
Dear RCSD Community,
At the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, October 22, the BOE will accept my
letter of retirement, effective June 30, 2025. I am grateful for the opportunity to have
served as your Superintendent of Schools for these past eight years and to have been a
public school educator for 32 years.
I have always believed that schools must work to develop critical thinkers, effective
communicators, collaborators, creative problem solvers, and caring individuals. It has
been an absolute pleasure for me to do my part in supporting the schools here in Rye in
doing so. Wherever my path may lead, I will continue to further that effort.
While there are many months and much work still to do before my retirement, as I
reflect on the past eight years, I am so proud of the extremely talented leaders and
educators in the Rye City Schools. The dedication of our administrators, teachers, and
staff to providing a high quality educational program that meets the needs of each
student is unparalleled and truly makes Rye a very special place. The sense of
community that exists here is unique and wonderful. It is evident at every student
performance, art show, athletic competition, parent university, budget café, PO and PTO
social, and many other joyful and moving moments. This unified sense of purpose
serves as a force to propel deep and meaningful learning within the district. The next
Superintendent will have an opportunity to work with a great team to continue to strive in
achieving the promise of The Rye Commitment.
The Rye Board of Education works hand-in-hand with the Superintendent and the
district to uphold that commitment. In this time where communities often face difficult
and occasionally divisive challenges, our hard-working, committed, highly-skilled, and
supportive Board truly embodies this promise. I am fortunate to have worked with 15
amazing individuals who have served on the Board during my tenure.
I remain committed to supporting our students, my colleagues, and the wider Rye
community in making this a wonderful school year. Thank you for your support of our
schools and the team of educators in Rye and thank you for all that you have given me
over these past eight years.
With appreciation,
Eric Byrne, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
