Welcome to Kindergarten

  • Kindergarten at Milton School is an exciting year of learning and growth.  Our goal is to create a community of learners who are enthusiastic about school and fully engaged in the educational process.  Our approach is developmental and differentiated by learning style and ability.  We believe in a balanced literacy approach, which includes read-alouds, guided reading, shared reading, independent reading, and word study.  We utilize a workshop approach for reading and writing, which allows our students to be active participants in each lesson.

Our science curriculum is supported by Science 21, an innovative program that emphasizes a hands-on approach to exploring the world. Math is taught through Houghton-Mifflin’s Math Expressions; this constructivist program allows students exposure to early math concepts through games, stories, and manipulatives. In social studies, our focus includes themes such as “All About Me”, “My Family”, community, holiday celebrations across cultures, and an introduction to economic themes such as wants and needs.  At the heart of our curriculum across subjects is an inquiry-based methodology that supports and encourages the natural curiosity of our kindergartners.  At Milton, kindergarten students build a strong foundation of skills, both academic and social, that will serve them well throughout their school years.  And we have fun doing it!
