Combined Girls Hockey Team Advances in Regional Playoffs

Three Rye City School District students are making an impact this postseason as members of the East Green Wave combined girls hockey team, which recently advanced in regional playoff competition.

Freshmen June Kleiner and Akina Brittain, along with junior Kate Weidinger, helped lead the East Green Wave through a strong stretch of postseason play, representing Rye alongside students from several Westchester schools.

The team earned a dramatic victory in the Section 1 championship game last week, defeating their opponent 1–0 in overtime. Kleiner scored the game-winning goal, while Brittain recorded a shutout in net to secure the title.

Building on that momentum, the East Green Wave delivered an impressive performance in regional semifinal action, defeating North by a score of 8–1 to continue their playoff run. Kleiner led the offense with an outstanding performance, scoring five goals and adding two assists, while Brittain was strong in goal, making 24 saves.

The win advances the East Green Wave to the next round of regional competition, marking an exciting achievement for the team and for Rye’s student-athletes competing at a high level of interscholastic athletics.

The East Green Wave combined program provides student-athletes the opportunity to compete at a high level while fostering teamwork across school communities. Rye City School District is proud to see its students representing the district with skill, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the postseason play.

The team will continue its playoff run with an upcoming regional matchup, building a season defined by strong teamwork and standout individual performances.
