Community Update: 10/11/24

Dear RCSD Community,

As a reminder, we have another long weekend in honor of Columbus/Indigenous People’s Day on Monday.

BOE Book Talk

At Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, the Board held its annual book talk. This year’s selection was Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic - and What We Can Do About It by Jennifer Breheny Wallace. If the author’s name sounds familiar, it’s because she was the first speaker for Heard in Rye last year. Never Enough is a book I have recommended to parents before. Wallace raised her own family in Fairfield County, CT, and therefore is familiar with the dynamics of communities like ours. To watch the book talk, click here and start watching at 8:30.

NYSSBA Board of Education Recognition Week

Speaking of the Board of Education, next week, October 14-18, is the New York State School Board Association’s (NYSSBA) School Board Recognition Week. Please take a moment to thank our Board of Education members for their service. Although they are elected, our Board members are volunteers who tirelessly give their time and talent for the benefit of the entire Rye community. Their work is so important to the success of our schools:

Jane Anderson (President)
Jennifer Boyle (Vice President)
Callie Erickson
Shaun Kloepfer
Valerie Lapham
Matt Schibanoff
Tom Stein

Osborn Scare Fair

Please mark your calendars for the annual Osborn Scare Fair, taking place next Saturday, October 19, from 9:30 a.m. -2:30 p.m., rain or shine. This year, fair organizers are very much in need of student volunteers to help run games (they will receive volunteer hours!). The link to sign up is here

For fair attendees, in addition to old favorites including the Amazon zipline, bouncy houses, and the train ride, there are some new attractions this year, including a multi-sided rock climbing wall and a "Little Monsters" games area set aside especially for the 6 and under crew.

Colonel Mustard in the Library with the Candlestick

Also next weekend, the Rye High School Parsons Street Players are presenting “Clue: On Stage” at the RHS Performing Arts Center in three shows: Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Clue is a farcical murder mystery adapted from the 1985 film Clue, itself based on the popular board game of the same name. Parents of younger theatergoers please use discretion as the play includes some adult themes.

Have an easy fast to those who are observing Yom Kippur this weekend. Enjoy the long weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.

Let's Go Mets, Yankees, and Garnets!!

Sincerely,
Eric Byrne, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
