Community Update: 11/15/24

Community Update: 11/15/24

Dear RCSD Community,

Literacy Presentation at BOE Meeting

At Tuesday night’s board meeting, we heard a terrific update on literacy instruction at the elementary level. We learned about the grades K-2 UFLI phonics program and the grades 3-5 Spelling Connections program. We watched some videos of literacy instruction in action and heard from teachers and instructional coaches about the students’ experiences and their reflections on the programs (hint: they are going really well). To watch, click here and start watching at 13:38.

Open Topics Forum at Next BOE Meeting

This Tuesday, November 19, we will host one of two Open Topics forums at the Board of Education meeting. These are opportunities for members of the public to meet with small groups of Board members in an informal setting. If you have questions about the school district or want to make a comment or give feedback, this is a great way to go about it. At the conclusion of the small group sessions, we recap the discussions for the benefit of the public. Our second Open Topics forum of the school year is in March.

Construction Update

In construction news, we have received New York State approval for the new wing at Osborn School. We have now put requests for bids out for the new wings at both Midland and Osborn Schools. The RHS/RMS softball field renovation is underway and on track to be completed for the spring season. In other good news, our facilities crew has found that we are able to repurpose some of the clay from the RHS/RMS softball field for the Milton softball field, so we will be able to make some improvements to that field as well.

Soccer/Football This Weekend

The girls varsity soccer team beat Chenango Valley last weekend so they are headed to the state semifinals for the second year in a row. The girls left for Cortland, NY, at noon today. Students and staff gathered outside in front of the high school to send the team and coaches off in true Garnet style, and they were escorted out of town by the Rye police and fire departments.

The team takes on New Hartford on Saturday at noon.  If they win, they face the winner of Mendon vs. Shoreham-Wading River Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in the New York State championships. Tickets are here, or watch here (paid subscription).

The boys varsity football team remains undefeated after winning versus Yorktown last weekend. Tonight they take on Somers in the Class A Section Finals at 6:00 p.m. at Mahopac High School. Both teams are undefeated and they both won a State Championship last year, just in different classes. If you go, wear a warm coat. Tickets can be purchased here, or watch here (paid subscription).

Swimmers to States

Next Friday and Saturday, five of our RHS girls varsity swimmers will compete in the state swimming and diving championships in Rochester, NY. Tickets can be purchased here, or watch here (paid subscription).

Go Garnets!

Sincerely,
Eric Byrne, Ed.D.
