Community Update: 11/10/23
Dear RCSD Community,
As you (hopefully) know, there was no school today in observance of Veterans Day, so I am sending a slightly abbreviated Community Update.
Marking Veterans Day
Many and heartfelt thanks to all of the veterans near and far who have served and are serving our country. Rye American Legion Post 128 is holding its annual Veterans Day observance tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. on the Village Green (the event will move indoors to City Hall in case of rain). Post Commander Fred de Barros will welcome guests before turning the mic over to local elected officials for remarks. Mayor Josh Cohn, County Executive George Latimer, and Assemblyman Steve Otis are speaking. Legionnaires and members of the Rye Sons of American Legion will read the intertwined story of two Rye veterans, Charles Moxhay and Elliott Eakin (both RHS graduates), who flew a B-17 together as members of the US Army Air Corps 8th Air Force in WWII.

Polar Plunge
On Saturday at 10:00 a.m., I will be joining the RHS National Honor Society members in a Polar Plunge at Playland to raise funds for the New York Special Olympics. Fortunately, the weather doesn’t look all that polar. The QR code to donate to this wonderful organization is here:
Playoffs Continue
The regional champion girls varsity soccer team advances to the state final four at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday to take on Lewiston-Porter High School at Cortland High School (please note: this is not Cortlandt Manor; Cortland is north of Binghamton). If they win the team will move on to the finals on Sunday at Cortland H.S. at 12:00 p.m. Ticket information and the link to watch on the NFHS Network will be posted here.
The varsity football team continues down the playoff road to finals taking on Pleasantville at Arlington High School at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are available here. If you can’t make it to Arlington, watch the matchup on LocalLive here.
Our JV teams have had incredible winter seasons: the JV field hockey, football, and girls soccer teams were all undefeated this year: field hockey is 13-0-0, football is 8-0-0, and soccer is 11-0-1. Congratulations to the athletes, their parents, and their coaches!
Go Garnets!
Thank You
This week concludes National School Psychology Week which is dedicated to highlighting the important work school psychologists do to help all students thrive. Thank you, school psychologists. You make a critical difference in the lives of our students and their families every day.
Have a wonderful weekend and a bright and happy Diwali to those who are celebrating.
Sincerely,
Eric Byrne, Ed.D.
