National School Counseling Week: Supporting Students Through Growth, Wellness, and the Path Forward

In recognition of National School Counseling Week, Rye City School District celebrates the important work of its school counselors and the role they play in supporting students’ academic success, emotional well-being, and future planning.

Across all grade levels, RCSD counselors help students navigate school with confidence and resilience. Their work is grounded in the understanding that learning and personal growth are not linear processes, and that students benefit most when they are supported academically, socially, and emotionally.

RCSD’s school counseling program follows a comprehensive model focused on three interconnected areas: academic development, social-emotional learning, and college and career readiness. These areas overlap intentionally, reflecting the belief that students thrive when they are supported as learners, individuals, and future adults. Counselors engage with students through classroom lessons, small group instruction, individual meetings, and family collaboration with a consistent emphasis on reflection, adaptability, and growth.

“Part of our role is helping students recognize that growth doesn’t always follow a straight path,” said Seth Busching, Director of School Counseling and Student Wellness. “Trying new approaches, learning from setbacks, and adjusting goals are all important parts of development.”

A key focus of the counseling program is supporting students’ emotional wellness through skill-building. One way this is accomplished is through the district’s school-based Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills approach, implemented across grades three through eight. DBT teaches students skills in emotion regulation and distress tolerance, with an emphasis on balancing two opposing ideas or truths, such as accepting challenges while also working toward positive change.

In RCSD, DBT skills are taught through an interdepartmental partnership with the physical education and health department, reinforcing the connection between mental and physical wellness. Counselors support students in applying these skills during individual and group meetings, helping them use what they learn in real-life situations. This approach emphasizes practical skill building rather than therapy, equipping students with tools they can use independently.

School counselors also play a critical role in helping students navigate transitions throughout the year, including academic planning, course selection, and regular check-ins. At the high school level, counselors guide students through post-secondary planning with an emphasis on self-exploration, career discovery, and identifying opportunities that align with each student’s interests and strengths. Juniors are currently participating in the district’s Managing Your Future curriculum, which introduces these concepts and supports thoughtful preparation for life after high school.

As college acceptances begin to arrive, counselors work closely with students and families to celebrate accomplishments while reinforcing the importance of finding the right fit. RCSD’s counseling philosophy recognizes that there are many meaningful paths forward and many ways for students to succeed.

National School Counseling Week provides an opportunity to recognize the dedication, compassion, and expertise of RCSD’s counselors. Rye City School District is grateful for the work they do each day to support students during moments of challenge, growth, and celebration, and to strengthen the overall school community.
