New Classes and Curriculum Updates at the RCSD

The RCSD has several new classes available for students to take at the high school level, has updated several class curricula, and has modified existing courses at RMS and RHS to educate students about Artificial Intelligence.

The new International Baccalaureate (IB) programme launches at Rye High School this fall after a two-year approval process required to become an International Baccalaureate World School. High school students can either choose to take individual IB classes or work towards an International Baccalaureate diploma. There are 12 new IB classes offered:

In addition to the IB classes, there is a new Advanced Placement (AP) class at RHS. AP Research is the second course in the AP Capstone series; the AP Seminar class (offered for the first time last year) is a prerequisite. AP Seminar is an English elective class for students in grades 11-12 that fosters critical thinking and academic research skills. Students select a topic that interests them and conduct a year-long research project where their end goal is to write an extensive paper that contributes to the already-existing scholarship on their topic and fills a gap in the academic conversation.

Two familiar RHS classes have had their curricula updated over the summer: chemistry and physics courses are now updated to reflect the new New York State High School Science Standards

As a district, we are committed to teaching students at every level how to safely and securely use AI to enhance learning, not to replace it. Elementary school students will be introduced to foundational AI concepts and vocabulary during Media Center (library) classes. At RMS, new learning modules in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been added to the curriculum of the 6th grade class “Passion Projects” course and to the 7th- and 8th-grade “Library Crosswalk” classes. At RHS, we are redesigning the 9th-grade “English Composition” semester-long class all students take to infuse it with AI literacy.
