Rye High School senior and varsity girls basketball standout Phoebe Greto was named the Con Edison Scholar Athlete of the Week.

The Con Edison Scholar Athlete Award, now also known as the Scholar Athlete of the Week Award, recognizes high school student-athletes in Westchester County and the Lower Hudson Valley for excellence in academics, athletics, and community service. Winners are chosen weekly by a panel of athletic directors and coaches from among nominated students. All winners are eligible for a variety of memorial scholarships distributed annually at a spring banquet. The program is currently in its 74th year.

The reasons for Phoebe’s nomination, as reported by LoHud Sports, are as follows:

Athletics

In a January 21 win over Greely, Greto scored 18 points. In a January 17 loss to Albertus Magnus, she recorded four points, 12 rebounds, and two assists. In a January 14 win over Mahopac, Greto posted 24 points and 13 rebounds. As of January 21, she averages 17 points and 11 rebounds per game.

Greto was named MVP of Rye’s bracket at the KSA Tournament in Orlando, Florida, and also earned MVP honors at the Crusader Classic, where she reached the 1,000-point milestone on January 3 in a win over Westlake.

She has earned fourth team all-state honors, was named the Section 1 Class AA MVP last season, and this season was selected to the LoHud Super 7. A multi-sport athlete, Greto also led the Rye girls volleyball team to the program’s first Section 1 championship and first-ever regional final this past season, earning All-League, All-Section, and fourth team all-state honors.

Greto will continue her athletic career next year at Denison University, where she will play for the women's basketball team.

Extracurriculars

Greto is the President of Best Buddies and an active member of the Bridges Club. She has participated in the Don Bosco Youth Program for three years and helped organize a holiday toy drive for Head Start in Port Chester. She has also written holiday cards to pediatric cancer patients through Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and has been an active member of Unified Basketball.

Phoebe Greto’s achievements on the court, in the classroom, and in the community exemplify the spirit of the Con Edison Scholar Athlete Award.

She was recently interviewed by GameDay One, which will be featured here.
