Rye High School Students Bring Student Voice to Board of Education

Rye High School Students Bring Student Voice to Board of Education

Student perspectives will have a direct connection to district leadership this school year as three Rye High School students serve as ex officio members of the Rye City School District Board of Education.

Senior Fiona Marino, senior Daniel Morris and junior Lyla Herz were selected last spring following an interview process that included dozens of student candidates. The three began their service this month and will represent the student perspective throughout the 26-2027 school year.

As non-voting members of the Board of Education, Marino, Morris and Herz will participate in public Board meetings and provide insight into district initiatives and decisions that affect students. They will also communicate with students in kindergarten through 12th grade, gathering perspectives from across schools, grade levels and experiences to help ensure a broad range of student voices is represented.

The ex officio student member role was introduced during the 2025-26 school year as an additional opportunity to strengthen student voice within the district. Through their service, this year’s representatives will help create connections between students and district leadership while gaining firsthand experience with civic engagement and the work of the Board of Education.

The opportunity also reflects The Rye Commitment by encouraging students to communicate thoughtfully, engage with different perspectives and contribute meaningfully to their school community. In their new roles, Marino, Morris and Herz will have an opportunity to put those skills into practice while advocating for their peers and learning more about district governance.

RCSD looks forward to hearing from its three student representatives throughout the year and thanks them for taking on this important leadership role.
