Rye Kindergartners Welcome Special Guests for Lunch

Rye Kindergartners Welcome Special Guests for Lunch

Lunchtime became an opportunity to share a piece of the school day as kindergartners across Rye City School District welcomed parents, family members and other special guests to their elementary schools for a beloved beginning-of-the-year tradition.

Each fall, Osborn, Midland and Milton schools invite kindergarten families to experience the cafeteria alongside their children. The visits give guests a firsthand look at a part of the school day that is often brand new for the district’s youngest students, while giving kindergarteners the chance to proudly show how they are settling into their new routines.

During the visits, students guided their guests through the lunch experience, from exploring the variety of cafeteria offerings and moving through the lunch line to checking out and finding their seats. Families also had an opportunity to see where their children eat each day and experience the sights, sounds and energy of an elementary school lunch period.

The tradition is Rye’s inclusive take on National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day. By inviting each child to bring a special person rather than limiting the event to parents, students can share the experience with grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, family friends and other important people in their lives.

Beyond learning about lunch, the visits offer families another window into their children’s daily experiences at school. For kindergarteners who are still becoming familiar with a new building, new classmates and new routines, sharing what they have learned with someone special gives them an opportunity to take the lead and celebrate their growing independence.

The experience also reflects The Rye Commitment as students practice communicating with others, building meaningful relationships and growing as confident, independent members of their school communities.

With special guests by their sides, Rye’s kindergarteners turned an everyday part of the school day into a memorable way to celebrate family, community and the start of their elementary school experience.
