  • RCSD Community Update: 10/15/21

Next week (October 18-22) marks New York State Board of Education Recognition Week. The seven members of the RCSD Board of Education work tirelessly on behalf of the students, families, faculty, and staff of the Rye City schools. We are fortunate to have such a hardworking and dedicated group of volunteers serving on our Board of Education. Please take a moment to thank a school board member for all they give to the community of Rye, this coming week and every week.

A few parents have asked me if we will have to make up for those two days our schools were closed after Ida. The short answer is “no.” Because the Governor declared a State of Emergency, those days are not counted against us. I have also confirmed this is the case with the State Education Department. Our three snow/emergency days remain unused.

  • Community Members Needed for District Committees

The Rye City School District is in need of community volunteers to serve on three District committees: Audit, Facilities, and Technology. The District’s working committees offer thoughtful and critical recommendations for the effective and efficient operation of the schools. They focus on specific, annual charges and report progress at Board of Education meetings periodically throughout the year.

  • RCSD Community Update: 10/1/21

Happy October! We have a lot to celebrate this month. Tomorrow, October 2, is National Custodial Workers Day. The District’s custodial staff has been absolutely incredible this year, keeping our schools spotless in the wake of Ida, the resulting remediation, and ongoing construction. I wrote about their dedication in my letter in September’s Superintendent’s Bulletin. I know our parent organizations have some special things planned for our custodians to thank them, but if you see one of these wonderful gentlemen around the schools, please add your thanks. October is also National Principals Month. Please take a moment to acknowledge your school principal(s) for their contribution to student - and teacher - success.

I hope you and your families are recovering well after tropical storm Ida. The impact of the storm on Rye has been significant with damage to homes, businesses, community spaces and, unfortunately, our schools. Across the district, all school buildings sustained flood damage. We will need to slightly alter our opening schedule to allow for clean up, repair and classroom set up that was delayed because of the storm. The school year will now begin for all students in person on Monday, September 13th.

  • RCSD Fall Opening Update: 8/25/21

I hope you’ve had a good summer. Thank you so much for all of your support and flexibility as we navigated the pandemic over the past two years. We are excited that our schools will be fully open for in-person learning. Our first day of school is Thursday, September 9. In August, the District received guidance regarding school opening from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) based on CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations. On August 24, incoming Governor Kathy Hochul directed the Department of Health (DOH) to institute universal masking for anyone entering New York schools. In addition, the Governor announced that all school employees will be required to show proof of vaccination or participate in regular COVID testing. We expect more details on this order in the coming days. This is a fairly lengthy communication as there is much to share.

  • RCSD School Opening Update for Next Week

I hope you and your family are enjoying the summer. I am writing with an update regarding school opening in September. More detailed information will follow in the coming weeks, but I wanted to outline some of the more critical components of the 2021-2022 school year that we know based on guidance from the New York State Education Department, CDC, and the American Academy of Pediatrics and impacted by the recent increase in cases in Westchester County resulting from the Delta variant:

The District has received updated mask guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics' due to the surge in the Covid Delta variant. Effective immediately, mask-wearing will be required indoors for all vaccinated and unvaccinated persons. The District also still requires that everyone continue to monitor their health status prior to entering a school building and stay home when appropriate.

  • RCSD July Community Update: 7/23/21

I hope you and your families are having a wonderful summer! Back to School: I’ve been hearing from quite a few of you asking about what school will look like in the fall. The simple answer is that we’re not entirely sure. We have not received any guidance from the State as of yet; we are hopeful that they will issue some soon. I can tell you that we are expecting and planning that our schools will be fully open with no remote programming. As soon as we receive any information, I will communicate that out to the community.

The District has received updated guidance from the Department of Health relevant to summer school. Effective immediately, the online daily health screening questionnaire will no longer be required prior to students or faculty/staff entering a school building. However, we are still requiring that everyone continue to monitor their health status prior to entering a school building and stay home when appropriate.

Phew. We made it. While I have enjoyed sending these weekly missives to the community, I have most certainly not enjoyed the driving force behind them. I believe that you will not be hearing from me nearly as often next year. However, I do intend to continue with frequent District-wide communications.
