RCSD Community Update: 9/17/21

September 17, 2021

Dear RCSD Community,

Week one is in the books. Thank you to everyone who helped make the start to school so smooth this year. I think it is in no small part due to the tremendously positive attitude of our students, faculty, and staff. We truly are Garnet Strong!

On Tuesday night, I presented a school opening update to the Board of Education. You can watch the video here and/or view the presentation deck here.

Post-Ida Remediation

As part of the update, I provided a progress report on repairs to the schools after Ida.  The good news is that we have made substantial progress over the past two weeks.  Items still on the “to do” list include:

RHS/RMS

  • New boilers on order/temporary boiler installation expected soon
  • Turf field requires supplemental grooming but is playable

Midland

  • Remediated classrooms need replacement drywall painted

Osborn

  • Remediated public spaces and classrooms need replacement drywall painted

CAB (Central Administration Building at 555 Theodore Fremd, Suite B101)

  • Carpet removal and replacement; drywall removal, airing, and replacement; painting

Enrollment

New students are continuing to enroll in the schools on a daily basis. Thus far, we have 2,923 students, slightly below our projected number of 2,948. The greatest number of gains has been in our Kindergarten classes - always the hardest to predict. Clearly, the real estate turnover in Rye has had an effect! Fortunately, we are still well within our class size guidelines at all levels.

Capital Project Work

A great deal of capital project work took place over the summer and will continue (after school hours) this fall and winter. If you have made any home renovations lately, you know lengthy waits for delivery of construction materials are the new reality.  Nonetheless, the improvement in the appearance of the schools is striking. We will be offering small-group and virtual tours of the renovated schools to the community in the coming months.
