At last night's Board of Education meeting, members of the Reopening Task Force presented an update of our work in preparing for September. The guiding principle of the task force is to define a safe, operationally-sound, and high-quality instructional program with a structured, consistent day for our students. A group of administrators, teachers, parents, students, support staff, community members, and outside experts are working hard to meticulously craft a reopening plan for September that includes clear expectations for students and staff. The task force is focusing on four key areas: Instructional, Operational, Social-Emotional, and Communication. Using models from across the globe and in the United States, we are analyzing successful school openings and remote programs to design our plan.
The decision to reopen schools rests solely with Governor Cuomo. And even though we have yet to receive any definitive guidance from the NY State Department of Health, the Governor's Office, or the NY State Education Department, our planning moves ahead. When guidance is received our plan will be reflective of the government and health expert guidelines.
