Update on New York State Testing in ELA, Math, and Science: 3/25/21

March 24, 2021

Dear Rye Families,

I hope this letter finds you and your families well. Traditionally, during this time of year, we are preparing our students for the spring New York State grades 3-8 testing in ELA and mathematics, and grades 4 & 8 science exams.  Last week, we received guidance from the New York State Education Department regarding the grades 3-8 exams and High School Regents exams. I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the NYS Department of Education (NYSED) Commissioner Betty A. Rosa and the NYS Board of Regents for seeking a federal waiver to forgo mandated testing for 2020-21. Although we are disappointed in the U.S. Secretary of Education’s announcement that he will deny all such waiver requests, we want to share with you changes in testing requirements made by the NYS Education Department, and what that means for us in the Rye City School District.

In compliance with federal requirements, NYSED must administer:

  • ELA and mathematics exams for grades 3-8
  • Science exams for grades 4 & 8

NYSED has announced that test results will not be utilized for any purpose, including academic support, promotion or retention, or teacher evaluations. Local school assessments will be used to determine the academic support needs of our students. Additionally, they have reduced the testing window to one day only, and mandated that the tests have only multiple-choice questions.

While we are required by Federal regulations to administer this year’s state exams, we believe that doing so is inappropriate given the current pandemic circumstances. Therefore, we will fulfill our mandate by offering the exams to any parent who chooses to have their child participate.

If you wish to have your child participate in this year’s in-person administration of the state exams, please complete this Google Form, one for each of your children, by Friday, April 9th, in order to allow us to properly prepare for any children who will be taking the tests. Please note that you can select the option of having your student(s) participate in one, two, or all three of the tests.  If we do not receive notification from you by this date, then we will assume your child will not be participating in this year’s 3-8 grade math, ELA, and/or grades 4 & 8 science state exams.

Students who are not participating will continue with regular classroom instruction.  Below please find a schedule for the exams:

  • Grades 3-8 English Language Arts: April 20th
  • Grades 3-8 Mathematics: May 4th
  • Science 4 & 8:  June 7th

At a later date, we will share more information regarding High School Regents exams.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly.

Thank you,

Eric Byrne, Ed. D.
