Reminder Regarding New York State Testing in ELA, Math, and Science
April 6, 2021
Dear Rye Families,
I hope you and your families had a wonderful spring break. As you may recall from my email on March 24, the RCSD will be administering grades 3-8 ELA and mathematics exams and science exams for grades 4 & 8 on an opt-in basis this year. The deadline to opt-in for the exams is this Friday, April 9th.
At this juncture, about 10% of our families have opted to have their children take the exams. Last evening, I held a Q&A session for parents who were interested in learning more about this year’s exams. You may watch the video by clicking here.
I want parents to know that the New York State Education Department (NYSED) has announced that this year’s test results cannot be used for any purpose whatsoever, including academic support services, promotion or retention, or teacher evaluations. The District will use individual school assessments to identify student academic support needs. Additionally, NYSED has trimmed the test considerably: it will consist of multiple-choice questions only and will be taken over the course of one day, versus the usual two. As a result, the tests cannot be compared to tests from previous years, and it is still unclear how they are to be scored. Exams will be administered during class time. Students not taking the exams will have regular classes during the testing time.
If you wish to have your child participate in this year’s in-person administration of the state exams, please complete this Google Form, one for each of your children, by this Friday, April 9th. Please note that you can select the option of having your student(s) participate in one, two, or all three of the tests. If we do not receive notification from you by this date, then we will assume your child will not be participating in this year’s 3-8 grade math, ELA, and/or grades 4 & 8 science state exams.
Below please find a schedule for the exams:
- Grades 3-8 English Language Arts: April 20th
- Grades 3-8 Mathematics: May 4th
- Science 4 & 8: June 7th
At a later date, we will share more information regarding High School Regents exams. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly.
