- Rye City School District
RMS Assistant Principal Announcement
June 1, 2021
Dear RCSD Community,
I am so pleased to share with you that Rye Middle School will soon have a new Assistant Principal. Earlier this evening, the Board of Education appointed Ms. Kristie Orlando as Assistant Principal of Rye Middle School. She will assume the role on July 1.
If Ms. Orlando’s name is familiar to you, it may be because she was named the District’s Teacher of the Year in 2020-21 and has worked in the School District for 13 years as both a teacher and an Instructional Technology Staff Developer.
Over the past two months, we conducted a rigorous search process, screening many candidates and conducting three levels of interviews with district administrators and a committee of stakeholders, including parents, administrators, teachers, and support staff. Additionally, central office administrators and representatives from the Board of Education met with the final candidates. Throughout the process, Ms. Orlando demonstrated a strong skill set as an instructional leader and administrator; an approachable demeanor and collaborative nature; a proven ability and commitment to building relationships with students; and deep experience working in partnership with teachers and staff.
Along with the recommendation of our committee, I strongly believe that Ms. Orlando is the right person to help the Rye Middle School continue to meet the goal of developing an educational program that advances the critical skills necessary for all learners to achieve success as citizens in the rapidly-changing global world and workplaces of the future.
Ms. Orlando joined the Rye City School District in 2008 as a World Languages teacher and was granted tenure in 2011. For nine years, she taught Spanish at Rye Middle School. As a teacher, she was always at the forefront of instructional technology.
In 2017 she applied for and received the position of teacher on special assignment/Instructional Technology Specialist, supporting teachers and administrators in grades 6-12. She has served as the Instructional Technology Staff Developer for the Middle and High School for four years.
Prior to coming to Rye, Kristie worked as an 8th-grade Spanish teacher at P.S./I.S. 194 in Bronx, NY. She has a BA from Muhlenberg College with a Major in Spanish and an MA in Bilingual/Bicultural Studies from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Ms. Orlando, her husband, Sunil Bengali, and two children live in Hawthorne.
A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all the committee members for their time and effort during the remote hiring process. The insights and feedback of the committee were invaluable.
Thank you also to Phil Campbell for serving as Interim Assistant Principal for the 2020-21 school year. His organizational skills and unshakably calm demeanor were invaluable during this challenging year.
Please join me in congratulating Ms. Orlando on her appointment as Assistant Principal of Rye Middle School.
Eric Byrne, Ed.D.
