RCSD Community Update: 1/7/22

Dear RCSD Community,

I hope everyone enjoyed the snow day. Unlike Wednesday’s ice storm, Mother Nature really delivered on the good stuff today.  Many people know I am a huge fan of the old-fashioned snow day. Everyone deserves a day off to build snow people, hit the hills on a sled, or merely lounge around in PJs eating pancakes and looking at the beautiful scene outside. Our children have had a lot taken away from them these past two years; I hope today brought them some simple joy.

Quarantine Requirement Changes

On December 27, the CDC announced changes to quarantine requirements for all non-vaccinated exposed and positive individuals. As of today, New York State still has not adopted this new guidance for students. Students who test positive for COVID or are exposed to a COVID-positive individual if unvaccinated are still required to quarantine for 10 days. We will communicate out when the State and County adopt the new guidance. I know this is incredibly frustrating for those parents whose students are affected.

I am hopeful that new guidance is forthcoming. I am planning a virtual Q&A for Monday, January 10, at 5:30 p.m. to discuss quarantine and testing information:

Gateway Testing Event

Thank you to those of you who participated in the Gateway testing event this Monday. While we had hoped to have results back in 24 hours, Mt. Sinai was overwhelmed with tests this week and we had to wait a bit longer. The good news is that the positivity rate was lower than the County positivity rate of 22.9%: we are at 9.52%. Of 441 individuals tested, 398 were negative, 42 positive, and one sample was invalid.

Vaccine Pop-Up Clinic for Ages 5-11

Last night, I notified parents grades K-11 of a pop-up COVID vaccination clinic Rye Beach Pharmacy is holding at Rye Middle School on January 11 and February 1. This is for first and second shots only for students in grades K-6; they cannot provide boosters. Please see my email for details and to sign up. We are grateful to Rye Beach Pharmacy for this opportunity for our students.

Enjoy the weekend and be well,

Eric Byrne, Ed.D.
