RCSD Community Update: 6/10/22
Dear RCSD Community,
End-of-year events are in full swing!
Last night, we celebrated senior recognition night at the Performing Arts Center. Seniors were recognized with civic, athletic, service, and achievement awards and scholarships from local organizations and in memory of community members. Graduation is coming up next Friday evening. I can’t tell you how thrilling it is to be having these events once again -- things that we formerly took for granted are so meaningful after a two-year absence!
Next week, our high schoolers begin taking their final exams. The schedule can be found here. There are no classes at the High School from Wednesday-Friday. Be prepared to wait at Starbucks, Playa Bowls, and the Granola Bar!
Transition from Elementary Schools to RMS
Speaking of moving up, this month the incoming 6th grade’s guidance counselor Robert Villanova has visited every 5th-grade classroom to introduce himself to the incoming 6th graders and provide them with helpful information about the middle school experience, both academic and the all-important social! Along the way, he answered a lot of questions about things that worry students about middle school, including concerns about the first day, how to find their classrooms, locker questions, and if they’ll be in class with their elementary school friends. Hopefully, the 5th graders now feel a bit less nervous about and more excited for the move to Middle School.
Transition from RMS to RHS
RMS and RHS are introducing a new program to help students acclimate from RMS to RHS. The RHS Student Ambassador program pairs incoming 9th graders as well as students new to the District in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade with current RHS students. Ambassadors work in pairs with a small group of new students supporting them through their initial transition into the High School. The student ambassadors are training now and will continue this work over the summer in preparation for summer orientation.
RyeACT Survey Results
You may recall that many of our High School and Middle School students voluntarily participated in an anonymous drug and alcohol survey in February of 2021. RyeACT has analyzed the resulting data and created a video featuring RCSD students to share the survey findings. Click this link to watch the video presentation: https://youtu.be/NsxQdQIuHis. As a community, we are so lucky to have RyeACT as a partner in keeping our children healthy and safe.
BOE Meeting - Equity Update
On Tuesday evening, members of the administrative team provided an update on the school district’s efforts to create more equitable, inclusive learning environments in our schools. Through the work of our students, faculty, staff, and administration, I am confident that we are creating a greater sense of belonging for all students. As we seek to fulfill the vision of the Rye Commitment, it is critical that we continue to grow and improve as a learning community. Here is a link to the presentation from Tuesday evening: http://boevideos.ryeschools.org/video/718892744. Begin watching at 20:00.
Come and Get `Em: COVID Test Kits
Just yesterday we received another shipment of 3,067 COVID test kits from New York State. If you have any need for COVID tests, please, please, stop by the district’s central offices at 555 Theodore Fremd, Suite B101, any day from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The tests are on a table in the front vestibule. Bring a wheelbarrow, or, at the very least, a large bag.
RHS Graphic Art on Display at CAB
On Wednesday evening, we hosted an opening reception for the High School graphic design art show at our central office. Parents, students, administrators, and art teachers enjoyed seeing student art framed and displayed in the central office hallways. The art will be in place through January of 2023, so stop by at your leisure. And take 20 COVID test kits on your way out!
We are no longer reporting case numbers on a weekly basis. Below, please find the New York State Dashboard where you may check school case numbers whenever you like -- we continue to report case counts to the state on a daily basis. Have a terrific weekend.
