RCSD Community Update: 2/17/23
Dear RCSD Community,
Wednesday was the 100th day of school for the 2022-23 school year. As you may know, the 100th day of school is a very big deal in Kindergarten. At Osborn School, Kindergartners (and teachers) in Mrs. Gelman’s class dressed up as 100-year-olds to mark the milestone. The photo (at bottom) was too cute not to share!
As a reminder, next week is our mid-winter recess. Schools are closed all week, from February 20th-24th. Offices are closed Monday and Tuesday and open for reduced hours (8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.) Wednesday through Friday. Should you be in need of COVID tests, we still have them aplenty in the lobby of the District offices at 555 Theodore Fremd Avenue, Suite B101. There will be no community update next Friday the 24th; my next update will be March 3rd.
Pedestrian/Biker Safety
I can’t believe I am writing this in mid-February, but along with the wonderful spring-like weather this week, we have had a number of near-misses with student pedestrians and bikers. Please be extra aware of students biking and walking to school as they are out of practice and may very well be distracted by phones, homework, faux spring fever, etc.
Board of Education Presentations
At a Valentine’s Day edition Board meeting on Tuesday night, the Board heard presentations about the Curriculum and Special Education portions of the 2023-24 school year recommended budget. The presentations had a nice summation of all the work that is going on and will continue into the future in both arenas. The Curriculum presentation is linked here. Watch the video here, starting at 10:30. The Special Education presentation is linked here and the video is here; begin watching at 35:00.
K Registration for 2023-24
As part of budgeting for next year, one of our “wild cards” is Kindergarten registration. We never know exactly how many students will be coming on the first day of Kindergarten, and every year there are some surprises in both the plus and minus columns -- students whose parents decide to wait another year, or forge ahead with Kindergarten, or transfer to a private school, or move in or out of Rye, etc., and forget to tell us! If you have an incoming Kindergartener, please let us know. Please also spread the word to friends and neighbors who have little ones as well. It’s always interesting how many parents think we know (psychically?) that they have a Kindergartener coming to school. We’re good, but we’re not that good! The link to register is here. Registration opens on February 27th. A reminder postcard is also heading to your mailbox after the break. Any questions about student registration and enrollment can be sent along to our Registrar, Wendy Wels, at rcsd.registration@ryeschools.org.
The Parsons Street Players Present Footloose
Mark your calendars! The RHS Parsons Street Players are set to perform Footloose The Musical in three performances on Friday, March 3rd, at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 4th, at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the RHS Performing Arts Center. It’s sure to make you want to get up and dance! Please be aware that the show does contain some mature themes and may not be appropriate for younger children. A link to the show flyer is here.
Have a happy President’s Day and a wonderful winter recess. I look forward to seeing everyone back in the schools and raring to go on Monday, February 27th.
Sincerely,
Eric Byrne, Ed.D.
