Hybrid Learning and X Period Tomorrow at RMS

September 9, 2020

Dear Rye Families,

We had another successful day of school today!  Arrival was seamless, and students were happy to be back in the building.  Students streamed into their classes, and teachers saw both student Tracks (A-L and M-Z) at the same time. Tomorrow is the first full day of hybrid learning for all students. Please note that rain is in the forecast, so students attending in-person should come with rain gear and allow a few extra minutes for entry.

Tomorrow afternoon, we will be holding the first X period for all students.  For those who are new to the school, X period is a mandatory study period at the end of each school day, with the exception of Fridays. X period runs from 2:36-3:00 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.  X period runs from 1:06-1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Students who are at home will have the opportunity to stream into X period.  Students who are in the building will have the opportunity to see their teachers for X period.  We are creating a Google Form that will be sent to all Middle School students during school tomorrow.  Students will use the form to sign up for the X period class of their choice.

To ensure social distancing, we must limit the number of students who can join a teacher’s X period.  Because most teachers in the Middle School share rooms, due to safety precautions,  in-person student attendance must be capped.  Teachers will be able to accommodate 7 to 15 in-person students (depending on the size of their classroom) and can accommodate no more than 20 students (in-person and remote) in total in order to be able to give one-on-one attention to students.  Remote students will have access to X period teachers, but they will have to adhere to their teacher’s directions with regards to using the chat, muting microphones, etc.  The Middle School will create spaces in the MPR, gym, and outside (weather permitting) for students who want to take advantage of an independent study or physical activity.  We will assess the logistics of X period and make adjustments when needed to class sizes for both remote and in-person students.

I am looking forward to starting full days with everyone. For days your child is in school, please be sure to complete your child’s health assessment checklist form by 7:00 a.m., charge your child’s District-issued Chromebook, pack a lunch (if possible), and print an updated copy of your child’s schedule as the schedules now have lunch room locations.

Best,

Joe DiGiovanni
