Parent Assistance with Mask Requirements

Dear Rye Middle School Parents/Guardians:

I hope everyone has enjoyed the first three weeks of school.  Since we have returned to school, the staff and I have found we need to remind students to wear their masks at all times when they are in the school somewhat frequently.  In addition, teachers have expressed concern about students wearing their masks improperly, e.g. not covering the nose, or mouth, or both. Please remind your student(s) that all RMS students, faculty, and staff are required to wear a mask indoors, regardless of vaccination status.   This is not just school or District policy; this is State law. Masks are optional outdoors.

Please refer to the detailed information below, and be sure your child is following the requirements.

Face Mask Requirements

Face masks have been and will continue to be an essential component of the infection control measures being taken to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission in schools. Students, employees, and visitors to our schools will be required to wear well-fitting face masks covering both the nose and mouth indoors, including on school buses, regardless of their vaccination status. Students, faculty, and staff will not be required to wear face masks when outdoors. Students will be allowed to remove face masks during meals and for short breaks so long as they maintain appropriate social distance (3 feet).

Acceptable face masks include well-fitting cloth-based face masks and surgical masks that cover both the mouth and nose.

The proper use of a face mask will keep your child from having to quarantine when 3 feet apart from an individual that is COVID-19 positive. The staff and I appreciate your continued support as we strive to create a safe environment for everyone in our school.  Thank you for having a conversation with your child(ren) about this requirement.

Thank you,

Joe DiGiovanni
