RCSD Community Update: 10/15/21

Dear RCSD Community,

Next week (October 18-22) marks New York State Board of Education Recognition Week.  The seven members of the RCSD Board of Education work tirelessly on behalf of the students, families, faculty, and staff of the Rye City schools. We are fortunate to have such a hardworking and dedicated group of volunteers serving on our Board of Education. Please take a moment to thank a school board member for all they give to the community of Rye, this coming week and every week.

New RAISE Website

RAISE (Rye’s All Inclusive Special Education) is a wonderful group that assists parents of children and young adults in our community who learn and live differently. It is RAISE’s mission to promote continuous improvement for children with disabilities through advocacy, collaboration, inclusion, and resources. RAISE has just launched a brand new website with all sorts of great information, including upcoming events, videos, and parent resources. The site also hosts a link to join the RAISE community and receive RAISE’s newsletter. Thank you to RAISE for all it does for our students, families, and community.

Parent University Offerings

The District is offering a robust variety of online parent workshops this year through its Parent University program. To see a catalog of workshops and find Google Meet links, please click here. If you have suggestions for other topics you’d like to see on offer, please click here. We will send out reminders closer to the actual events, never fear.

Backyard Sports ISO Volunteers

Rye Recreation has partnered with a group called Backyard Sports to provide an inclusive after-school soccer program for students in grades K-8 who need a little extra assistance. The program is looking for additional middle and high school student volunteers to help out on a weekly basis. The program is run by adult coaches; volunteers are paired with an athlete to assist them in acquiring soccer skills and participating in competitive games and challenges. The program takes place on Thursdays from 4:00-5:00 p.m. at Rye Rec. To learn more and volunteer, please contact Suzy McKay at:  s.ugliarolo@gmail.com. I had a chance to drop by and watch the fun yesterday and athletes and volunteers alike were having a terrific time (see photo below).

Community Members Needed for RCSD Committees

Speaking of volunteers, the District is in search of community members to serve on three of the District’s working committees: Audit, Finance, and Technology. The committees offer thoughtful and critical recommendations for the effective and efficient operation of the schools. They focus on specific, annual charges and report progress at Board of Education meetings periodically throughout the year. To learn more about the committees, their charges and meeting dates and to access application forms, please click here.

COVID Cases

We have had seven new cases of COVID-19 since my last community update: three at RMS and four at Midland School. Fortunately, only two of the cases resulted in a small number of quarantines and we have not seen any transmission taking place in our schools. In our conversations with the Department of Health, they continue to stress the importance of both vaccination and proper mask-wearing in preventing quarantines of asymptomatic students and faculty when exposed to a COVID-positive individual.

Have a wonderful, warm fall weekend.

Sincerely,

Eric Byrne, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools
